Gene Mingo is recognized at one of the AFL’s first superstars whose feats are preserved in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio as a halfback & field goal kicker. He is recognized as the first black field goal kicker in both the AFL/NFL. He scored the first points in Mile High Stadium, then called Bears Stadium, with a field goal of 18 yards. He also holds the Broncos record for the longest touchdown run from the line of scrimmage of 82 yards in the regular season, set October 5th, 1962 against the Oakland Raiders . Mingo played for 10 1/2 years with Denver, Oakland, Miami, Washington and Pittsburg where he ended his career with the Steelers. He was a versatile player playing both offense and defense. He was a half-back, wide receiver, fullback and defensive end among his positions.
